From its true name, Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdés, born in Madrid in August 1478 and died in Valladolid in 1557, of Noble descent, he was present at the surrender of Granada in 1492, and the return of Chistophe Colmb from his first trip. He made a military career on the occasion of the wars of Italy and then exerted the functions of the notary public and secretary of the Council of the Inquisition
In 1513, he participated in the expedition to Panama with Pedrarias davila with the functions of Secretary and writer. He is the author of several books, including "Historia general y natural de las Indias" which tells of the events between 1492 and 1549.
He is the defender of the Spaniards and the sworn enemy of the Indian on the polemics which opposed him to Bartolomé de las Casas.
He returned several times in Spain, returned in 1532, as official chonicler.
